Ways to keep your smile healthy between appointments

download (10) We’ve all heard that brushing and flossing can help reduce the risk of developing problems such as gum disease and tooth decay, but its important that patients understand that this is just one part of the equation when it comes to achieving and maintaining a healthy smile. Dr. Nancy Gill and her team at Golden Dental Solutions in Colorado are here to educate patients on techniques to ensuring a healthy smile for life!

  • Brush after meals. Many sugars and acids left on the surfaces of the teeth can contribute to the development of plaque, tartar, and even bacteria. This is why patients should always brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush after every meal when possible to keep the surfaces of the teeth clean.
  • Floss at least once a day. Food particles can become stuck between teeth and contribute to oral health problems. By flossing at the end of the day, patients can remove these food particles and improve their chances of keeping periodontal disease and tooth decay from developing.
  • Proper diet. The teeth are impacted by anything and everything a patient eats and drinks. High-sugar and high-carb diets can contribute to the development of many dental issues. When patients eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables, they can reduce their risk of common concerns. It is also great for their energy levels and overall health.
  • Contacting professionals when problems arise. It is well-known that patients need to book a cleaning and examination with a dentist at least every six months. However, between appointments, problems can occur. It is important for patients to connect with their dentist sooner rather than later, especially if their upcoming appointment is months away. Many problems caught early on can be effectively treated and avoid extensive damage over time.
