But finding out what type of sore is present is the first step in determining a solution. At Golden Dental Solutions, we see any types of mouth sores in patients and can assist.

Below are some of the sores seen at our practice that can be addressed with the help of a dental professional:

  • Canker sores. Canker sores are small sores that can develop in the oral cavity. They are painful for patients and can make it difficult to enjoy eating food. They are not contagious and may be managed with topical numbing creams until they resolve on their own.
  • Leukoplakia. Leukoplakia is often seen in patients who smoke or chew tobacco. It causes a tough, white substance to form anywhere in the mouth, though it is commonly seen on the inside of the cheeks, the gums, or on the roof of the mouth. The presence of leukoplakia can significantly increase a patient’s risk of developing oral cancer, and can sometimes be indicative that cancer is present in the same area.
  • Oral thrush. Patients who notice small white bumps on the gums, cheeks, or tongue may be diagnosed with a condition such as oral thrush, which is a yeast infection that can occur inside of the mouth. It requires medication to resolve, and is not usually problematic for most patients.
  • Cold sores. Cold sores are sores that are caused by the HPV virus. HPV is also responsible for warts on the skin. Cold sores are problematic for many patients, but their longevity can be shortened with prescription medications. They often come about in times of stress for most patients.
