What are the types of extractions available?
There are two varieties of tooth extractions that can be performed. Tooth extractions will be either simple or surgical:
• Simple extractions – a simple extraction is the extraction of a baby or adult tooth from the smile that has already erupted through the gum line and is visible to the dentist. The dentist has specialized instruments that can be used to hold onto the tooth and wedge it from the bone of the jaw to remove it quickly and easily with local anesthetics. This is a simple appointment at our practice that doesn’t require extensive healing time.
• Surgical extractions – in instances where the teeth are impacted or have not yet erupted through the gum line, surgical extractions are required. The dentist needs to cut into the gum tissue to access the teeth within the bone. This is a more invasive treatment typically done with stronger sedation and not just local anesthetics. Patients who have surgical extractions may have more downtime and recovery than those who have undergone simple extractions.
