Reasons why a tooth might be extracted

The idea of having a tooth removed may sound scary, but thanks to the care and attention of the team at Golden Dental Solutions, we have ways to remove a tooth but surgically and simply with no pain. Using specialized techniques, proper sedation, and anesthetics, many patients who need tooth extraction will find the process to be seamless and comfortable. But why might a patient require removal of a natural tooth?

Below are just a few situations we see in our facility where extraction is required:

• Severely damaged tooth – in some instances, if a tooth is beyond repair and cannot be restored with the use of fillings, dental crowns, root canals, or other options, it may be necessary to remove the tooth from the smile and replace it to maintain function and aesthetics.
• Preparation for full dentures – if a patient is already missing several teeth and they decide to move forward with full dentures, the dental practice will remove the remaining teeth before taking impressions to create an appliance.
• Preparation for orthodontic work – patients who have a crowded or misalignment smile may choose to have orthodontic work completed to repair the bite alignment and improve the aesthetics of the smile. However, some patients might need to have extra teeth removed to make room for repositioning of the dental arch.
• Problematic wisdom teeth – the wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt through the gumline, and are often problematic, causing patients to be at an increased risk of periodontal disease or to become impacted underneath the gums. The wisdom teeth are often extracted simply or surgically, depending on their position, and are not required to maintain a healthy, functioning smile.
